The Masonic Goat is an interesting account of the origins, and corrosive effects of the legend of ‘Goat Riding’ in Masonic initiation ceremonies.
Dating from 1936, I have been unable to determine its author or provenance.

When I was a member (and twice WM) of the Peel Lodge No.209 in Tamworth NSW, I used to visit the Lodge at Quirindi, a small town about 40kms. to the south. One of the members, a turkey farmer from west of the town donated a goat to the Lodge. The land on which the Temple stood had been donated by some Masonic benefactor in the distant past and was a very large block. Alex Chad’s idea was that as the land was fully fenced the goat would save money on mowing. The goat lived for several years, much to the consternation of the local townspeople, who were not Masons. Unfortunately the Lodge members never denied that the goat was used in their ceremonies because they thought it was very funny to fool them! Personally I was quite relieved when the goat, who naturally was called Billy, passed away. When my wife accompanied me to Installations there, even she would not believe me about its use and her father was a Mason. Incidentally I found the farmer, Alex Chad on Facebook a couple of years ago. He was in a nursing home but remembered me well.
