Why Symbolism?

This week’s presentation is taken from the book “The Old Past Master” by Charles H. Claudy which was first published in 1924.

It takes the form of a conversation between a new Mason and an ‘old past master’, who shares his wisdom by explaining why Freemasonry is so concerned with its veil of symbolism at the expense of clarity and directness.

Bronze Castings in Freemasonry

“Bronze Castings in Freemasonry – How they may have been built”, is another meticulously researched paper from Harvey Lovewell (and we know what that means – Maths content ahead!). It was first presented at the ANZMRC Kellerman lectures in 1998.

What of the Hour?

This is the second part of the presentation ‘The Necessity of the Royal Arch to the Master Mason’ by William F. Kuhn from 1921. ‘What of the Hour?’ is a short philosophical reflection on the true nature of the Royal Arch and its spiritual significance to those who take up its challenges.

More Light – The Necessity of the Royal Arch to the Master Mason

A short presentation by William F. Kuhn first presented in 1921.

Many thanks to RW Bro. Leitch for giving me a copy. The lecture comes in several sections. This is the first and lengthiest of them. The final section “What of the hour?” will make a nice short video in the coming days.

Point within a Circle

There are literally dozens of interpretations of the ‘Point within a Circle’ in the Masonic corpus. This enigmatic figure, universal in its use, is capable of seemingly infinite explanation.

In this anonymous 1931 paper a simple and straightforward interpretation is provided, eschewing the esoteric and instead looking back to the Operative Masons to find both meaning and moral.

Our affinity with the Ancient Egyptians

This is the 50th video from the quarries and it is a special one. More than double the length of the usual lectures, ‘Our affinity with the Ancient Egyptians’ is a deeply thought and moving address by W. Bro. R. W. Harwood, first presented in October 1977.
The address looks at the esoteric ceremonial of ancient Egypt and draws parallels with the Masonic ceremonies of the First, Second and Third degrees.

The Art of Memory and Masonry

This fascinating and expertly researched talk was written by Clarence A. Anderson. I have tried my best to find a date for the text, but have been unsuccessful.

My researches have found that there is a Clarence A. Anderson Jr. currently s member of St Paul Lodge No. 3 in Minnesota. I have sent an email to this brother, but have not received a reply. If he is the author of the work I congratulate him on his endeavours and pray his indulgence for my publication of his text. If he wishes it to be removed, I can be contacted at toowoombadistrictmasonic@gmail.com or via the website, and will happily do so.

A follow-up to the first video I ever did. This is the story of the infamous Leo Taxil and the hoax he perpetrated, both on Masonry and the Catholic Church, in the late 19th Century. A hoax whose consequences are still reverberating to the present day to the great detriment of both organisations.

The 47th Problem

The 47th problem of Euclid occupies a critical, yet often overlooked, position in Masonic usage and tradition. This anonymous lecture from October 1930 examines the 47th problem and goes some way towards explaining its Masonic significance. I am personally of the opinion that there is far, far more importance that should be ascribed to the 47th problem in a Masonic sense – but that will be the subject of a future video!

On Circumambulation (The Director’s Cut)

This is a bit of a cheat really. I recently got some new animation software and wasn’t entirely happy with the last ‘Circumambulation’ video. So I combined the two projects to add some overlays and create a new look. It’s the same old video, with some experimental flourishes!

On Circumambulation

This lecture is a funny and insightful look at the ‘rules’ and symbolism of Masonic circumambulation and their absolute irrelevance to the Southern Hemisphere!

It was first presented by V.Exc. Comp. B. G. Patterson, Grand Lecturer of the Supreme Grand Royal Arch Chapter of Qld, in 1943 and was originally published in the Qld Freemason Magazine in that year.

8:57 Minutes long
Cryptic Masonry

The content of this video has been taken from an 1880 essay by Hugh M’Curdy. It was published in “The Voice of Masonry” in that year.

Its tone, language and content are very representative of Masonic lectures of that period, with an emphasis on moral uplift, rather than the more modern approach foregrounding historical and historiographical pedantry.

The Legend of the True Cross
The Legend of the True Cross is a sequence of frescoes painted by Piero della Francesca in the Basilica of San Francesco in Arezzo. It is his largest work, and generally considered one of his finest, and an early Renaissance masterpiece. Its theme, derived from the popular 13th century book on the lives of saints by Jacopo da Varagine, the Golden Legend, is the triumph of the True Cross – the legend of the wood from the Garden of Eden becoming the Cross on which Jesus Christ was crucified.

This video explores the legend of the True Cross, using the illustrations by Francesca as a visual guide.
