The “Stupid Atheist”

The requirement for a candidate to hold a belief in a supreme being is a fundamental prerequisite for becoming a Freemason. While there are exceptions, such as the Grand Orient in France, where for a number of historical reasons beyond the scope of tonight’s paper this is not the case, belief in Deity is central to the Freemasonry which has descended from the establishment of the united Grand lodge in England in 1717.

Charges in the Craft make reference to either ‘Irreligious libertines’ or ‘stupid atheists’ or both when discussing this requirement.

Tonight’s anonymous paper, dating from 1932 explores this topic more fully, and comes up with some insightful reflections on its true meaning. I hope you enjoy it.
