This weekend … The Krata Repoa is an 18th-century Masonic text purporting to restore the ancient Egyptian system of initiation through a structured series of esoteric degrees. Compiled circa 1770 by German Freemasons Johann Wilhelm Bernhard von Hymmen and Friedrich Christoph von Köppen, it presents seven progressive stages of initiation, each echoing supposed rites of the Egyptian priesthood, albeit through the lens of Enlightenment-era Hermeticism and classical sources such as Iamblichus, Plutarch, and Herodotus. Despite lacking historical authenticity and betraying a distinctly Hellenistic reinterpretation of Egyptian religion, Krata Repoa became influential among esoteric circles for its attempt to construct a symbolic initiatory path grounded in the myth of Egypt as the primal source of hidden wisdom.
