The Story of a Stone

This week From the Quarries presents Ashlars: Rough and Smooth by the distinguished Masonic scholar J. Fairbairn Smith, Editor Emeritus of the Detroit Masonic World. Drawing on a lifetime in the Craft—initiated as a Lewis in Hawick Lodge, Scotland, in 1925—Smith explores the transformation of the Rough Ashlar into the Perfect Ashlar as both a working and moral allegory. Through the chisel of discipline and the square of conscience, he reminds us that Freemasonry does not add to the man but reveals what was already within the stone. A timeless meditation on the builder’s art, and on the shaping of the self in the quarry of life.
