The Forgotten Temple Before Solomon

Solomon’s Temple occupies a central place in Masonic symbolism, yet it did not emerge from a vacuum. Behind Jerusalem’s most famous sanctuary stood a wider world of Phoenician trade, diplomacy, craftsmanship, and sacred architecture.

In this lecture, we journey to the ancient city of Tyre and explore the Temple of Melqart, one of the most important sanctuaries of the ancient Mediterranean. Along the way, we examine the alliance between Hiram and Solomon, the role of Phoenician craftsmen in the Temple project, the famous pillars described by Herodotus, and the possibility that Solomon’s Temple formed part of a broader family of Levantine royal temples.

What can actually be known? Where does the evidence lead? And how much remains hidden beneath the ruins of the ancient world?

Special thanks to D X, a Master Mason-level supporter of the channel, who selected this topic as one of the benefits of his membership. His suggestion provided the inspiration for this exploration of Tyre, Melqart, and the world that stood behind Solomon’s Temple.
